One thing I have desired of the Lord
That I will seek
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord
All the days of my life
To behold the beauty of the Lord
And to inquire in His temple
Psalm 27:4
King David, the psalmist, had it right. If there is one thing worth our time, it is spending time with God. Gazing upon his beauty, beholding Love Himself.
David said it was the one thing he desired of the Lord. The one thing he sought. “To behold the beauty of the Lord.” And then he adds this, “and to inquire in His temple.” Wow.
The God who created the heavens and the earth, the One who hung the sun, the moon and the stars in the sky…listens to us. How absolutely breathtaking.
God is not afraid of your questions. He doesn’t think of anything as too small or insignificant or too hard to bring to him. If it’s on your heart, he wants you to bring it to him. After all that is what he wants, for you, for us, to come to him. It’s astonishing just how involved he wants to be in our lives. And he can be. If only we come to him.
God looks down from heaven on Adam’s descendants to see if there is anyone who acts wisely, to see if there is anyone who seeks help from God.
– Psalm 53:2
He wants us to inquire, to ask him questions. As a loving father, God wants us to come to him for counsel. And a whole lot more. He wants to comfort us, give us his peace and remind us how much he loves us. He also wants to make us more aware of how near and how engaged he already is with us.
He sees you. He knows what is weighing on you.
So why tell him what is on your heart or ask him questions when he knows it all before one word ever leaves your lips? (Psalm 139:2)
Relationship. He wants a real, living, dynamic relationship with you. He wants to have an ongoing conversation with you. He literally wants to talk with you about every part of your life. God’s thoughts about you outnumber the grains of sand on the earth. (Psalm 139:18)
He has a lot on his heart that he wants to share with you. Will you come?
The whole point of coming to him isn’t so much that we get an answer to our prayer or our question. Though God does hear them and he cares about the details of our lives. And he does answer prayer. The point…is spending time in his presence. Fixing our thoughts and attention on Him. It is intimacy with this loving God who is constantly thinking about you and wants to lead you and guide you like a loving father.
I would love to hear what you have discovered about shutting out the distractions and spending time with God. Share your thoughts in the comments!
